Audrey Marie Inukuyuk Saganna Jr. of Iḷisaġvik College

Audrey Marie Inukuyuk Saganna Jr.Audrey Marie Inukuyuk Saganna Jr. says her education is important because it gives her the knowledge and confidence to build the future she wants for herself. Initially stepping into Iḷisaġvik College, Audrey felt like she was just testing waters and trying to figure out where she fit comfortably. She kept going and stepped out of her comfort zone and joined the student government association realizing she was capable of leadership. At the same time, she’s very grateful to be able to relearn her Inupiaq language and cultural history and gain a better understanding of where she comes from. Education is something people can easily take for granted nowadays, and it’s something that wasn’t always available to the communities of the North Slope. When she graduates, Audrey wants to continue her studies in wildlife biology. Her goal is to work in a field where she can protect Arctic animals (or any animal in general), support conservation, and make sure our lands and wildlife stay healthy for future generations. Audrey wants a career where she can combine traditional knowledge with science, as well as give back by being an example for youth to follow.
