Kiera Killer of College of the Muscogee Nation

Kiera KillerKiera Killer is charting a bold and inspiring path as a first-generation college student at the College of the Muscogee Nation. Raised in Stilwell, Oklahoma, Kiera is the eldest of two siblings and was brought up by her parents, whose unwavering determination instilled in her the value of perseverance. Later, Kiera lived with her grandparents, where she learned the importance of respect, community, and faith. Her grandfather, a church deacon, provided a lasting Christian foundation that still guides her every day.

Kiera’s higher education journey was anything but linear and easy. Kiera wanted to go to college, but while she was in high school, was faced with financial challenges that she knew the cards were off the table for her to attend college. With no family familiar with the college experience, she believed it was out of reach, but Kiera refused to let her inherited limitations define her future. “What we inherit isn’t what we have to live with,” she says. Which is now a mantra she now lives by as she sets a powerful example for her siblings.

Kiera was once a teaching assistant for Tulsa Public Schools, however, she suddenly moved to Missouri to care for her partner’s grandmother. That period of soul-searching led to a transformative decision where she later returned to Oklahoma, seeking a fresh start with the help of family friends, landing in Okmulgee working for the College of the Muscogee Nation. It wasn’t long before she became both staff and student, embracing her future opportunity, pursuing her goal of becoming an elementary school teacher for first through third grades.

Kiera’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. She’s an active member of the Indigenous Media Club and Environmental Science Club, with plans to join Phi Theta Kappa. Each summer, she serves as a camp counselor for World Changers Eagle Flight Camp, where she helps Native youth engage in cultural activities, traditional dances, athletic sport discussions, beading, and basketweaving. Her work is deeply rooted in cultural preservation and youth empowerment.

For Kiera, education is more than a personal milestone, it’s a tribute to her ancestors and a tool for transformation. “Being at the college has helped me discover myself and evolve more as a person,” she reflects. “It’s helped me reconnect to my Muscogee side, and I’m grateful to represent the Nation in ways my ancestors never had access to.”

Kiera’s vision is clear; she is to uplift children facing obstacles and show them that their circumstances don’t define their potential. With heart, grit, and purpose, Kiera Killer is not just rewriting her own story, she’s helping others write theirs.
