Aanii, readers. This summer has been interesting, with a series of highs and lows.

A highlight of my summer was swimming at Grandma’s Beach, which is a spot on Lake Michigan that my grandma found many years ago. It is the perfect beach and swimming into Lake Michigan is nothing short of a sacred experience. Some days the waves are a powerful force that will shove you off your feet even in the shallow end. And some days the waves are so calm and serene you could nap in the water. It is one of my favorite spots on Earth.

A low of my summer has been the Line 5 permits that were getting approved. I’ve been wondering what we will drink if our waters are poisoned. I’ve been wondering what will happen to Grandma’s Beach if infrastructure is prioritized over nibi (water).

Another highlight of my summer was my dad’s celebration of life. It was a beautiful day and the only thing missing was him.

In regard to food highlights, the food of my summer has been pasta salad. I make it with chickpea pasta, fresh basil and cherry tomatoes from my garden, a splash of red wine vinegar, olive oil, and salad supreme seasoning. Another food highlight is the many, many strawberry popsicles I have consumed these past few months.

A major low of the summer was the wildfire smoke that completely overtook Michigan a few weeks ago. The AQI was so unhealthy, I couldn’t even believe it. I was so worried for the ezibanak (raccoons) who live in a tree behind my house as well as anyone else who was exposed to the toxic air. My mind has been thinking about the future of the environment and how this Earth will be for the generations to come.

The last highlight worth mentioning is the many mornings I woke up early to walk with my mom and sister at the park. I enjoyed being with them in nature and starting our days off talking, laughing, and moving.

As you can see, this summer has been interesting. But nonetheless I am grateful to be so near the sun. Michigan summers are a lovely time, and I hope the future of Michigan summers are protected and preserved.
