Shaquille Begay of Diné College

Shaquille BegayShaquille Begay is a member of the Navajo Nation. He is of the Deer Spring Bitter Water clan, born for the Towering House clan. His maternal grandfather comes from the Red Running into the Water clan, and his paternal grandfather is from the Tangle clan. He is from Cow Springs, Arizona —a place that has shaped his identity. Family means everything to Shaquille, especially being the second youngest of five siblings in a close-knit household led by his mother, Leta Begay, and his late father, Wilson Begay. Shaquille’s upbringing in a traditional Navajo home was rooted in core cultural values and the principle of t’áá hwó’ ají t’éego (it is up to you), which continues to guide every step of his journey.

As a senior at Diné College, Shaquille is proud to be pursuing a double major in business administration and an Associate of Science in public health. This educational path reflects both his ambitions and deep commitment to serving his community. His immediate goal is to graduate with a bachelor’s degree by spring 2026, a milestone that will mark the continuation of a journey rooted in perseverance, hard work, and a vision for the future. Additionally, he plans to further his education by pursuing a master’s degree in business administration with a specialization in healthcare administration at Southern Utah University. This next step aligns perfectly with his dream to improve healthcare services in the Navajo Nation, integrating modern medical care with traditional Diné practices to create a holistic, culturally sensitive healthcare system.

Being a first-generation college student is a source of immense pride and motivation for Shaquille. Diné College has played an indispensable role in shaping his academic and professional path. As a tribal college, it offers more than just education; it provides a supportive environment where Indigenous students can grow, learn, and thrive while staying connected to their roots. The flexibility and affordability of Diné College’s programs have allowed Shaquille to balance full-time work, family responsibilities, and academic pursuits without sacrificing one for the other. This accessibility is crucial for many students who juggle multiple roles and obligations.

Unlike many traditional college students, Shaquille began his higher education journey at the age of 29. Returning to school after a long absence initially felt intimidating. There were many hurdles—personal, financial, and academic—that could have easily deterred him. Balancing full-time employment with rigorous academic requirements was one of the most challenging tasks he faced. Tuition, textbooks, and everyday family expenses often added to the stress. Managing finances sometimes felt like an uphill battle, but he remained determined. His commitment to education was unwavering despite these pressures. Maintaining strong grades through long nights and relentless effort is a testament to his resilience and dedication.

Shaquille’s academic foundation was built at Diné College, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in business administration along with a certificate in public health. These credentials not only advanced his knowledge but also fueled a passion for healthcare, a passion that originated in the emergency room where he worked as a certified nursing assistant. Witnessing firsthand the struggles faced by many within the Navajo community, the lack of adequate healthcare services, disparities, and systemic challenges deeply affected him. It was in those moments, on the frontlines of patient care, that he realized the importance of leadership and systemic change in healthcare. He knew that to make a lasting impact, he needed to combine clinical knowledge with strong administrative skills to transform healthcare delivery in the Navajo Nation.

In addition to full-time studies, Shaquille has two jobs. He currently serves as an executive assistant to the chief financial officer at Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation, a role that has given him invaluable exposure to healthcare management and operations. This position has deepened his understanding of the complexities involved in running a healthcare facility, offering practical lessons that go far beyond what textbooks can teach. It has sharpened his ability to think critically and adapt to real-world challenges in ensuring the delivery of effective and efficient care. On weekends, Shaquille works at Antelope Point Marina, where he gains hands-on experience in operating a tourism-based business within the Navajo Nation. Balancing these roles has broadened his perspective and strengthened his professional foundation. Many people ask him why he takes on so much. The answer is simple: to gain the experience and skills that will shape his future career.

In addition to his academic degrees, Shaquille has pursued professional certifications to enhance his qualifications further. He has earned credentials from the Healthcare Financial Management Association. These certifications demonstrate a commitment to advancing his knowledge in healthcare finance and administration. More recently, he became a certified associate in project management through the Project Management Institute, to eventually earn certification. These achievements demonstrate a proactive approach to growth and readiness to assume leadership roles in healthcare. Ultimately, Shaquille aspires to become an ambulatory care director, overseeing clinic operations at a local hospital, ensuring that patient care is efficient, culturally respectful, and accessible to all members of the community.

Shaquille says that his parents have been his greatest source of inspiration throughout this journey. Both dedicated many years to serving healthcare organizations within the community, always putting others before themselves. His mother, now retired after a decades-long career, embodies a level of accomplishment that Shaquille deeply admires. His parents’ values of perseverance, humility, and a commitment to serving others have shaped who he is and continue to guide his path. Shaquille says, “My parents are the foundation of everything I pursue. Their teachings, grounded in love and hard work, have lit the path not only for me, but also for my siblings. They always told us: ‘Go to school, work hard, and come home.’ That message lives in my heart. Today, my older brother, a product of Diné College, holds a Doctor of Health Science degree from A.T. Still University. He is proof that our parents’ sacrifices were not in vain. We walk forward carrying their dreams. I aim to be a driving force for change building systems that truly serve Indigenous communities and honor our cultural heritage.”
